Soft metals

Soft metals are great for machining with CNC milling machines

Naturally hard metals such as tungsten and chromium are quite rare in the manufacturing industry. In fact, most metals are naturally soft metals, yet strong and strong enough to be suitable for fabricating various elements, bending or stretching. Soft, non-ferrous metals are easy to cut and easy to work with. The most common soft metals for CNC machining are copper alloys, and common applications include jewelry making, electroplating, and electrical wiring.

Soft metals are compatible with many manufacturing processes, but engineers often create soft metal parts through CNC machining using CNC milling machines. They use three of the most popular soft metals available on the market today. Copper is a unique metal for its antibacterial properties. For this reason, copper is commonly found in the medical industry to manufacture items such as bed rails, sinks, faucets and toilet equipment. Other popular applications include electric wires and electromagnets in the semiconductor industry.

Many manufacturers also use brass as it has good tensile strength and natural corrosion resistance. In addition, this material is very susceptible to machining and welding and does not cause excessive wear on the CNC machine. However, this material has its drawbacks. When brass comes into contact with ammonia or ammonia-based solutions, it becomes susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. In most cases, this limitation can be overcome by annealing during post-processing. From a financial point of view, brass is one of the more expensive soft metals. 360 brass is ideal for low friction applications and widely used in the manufacture of musical instruments, lock components and gears. Because brass has such a strong resemblance to gold, it also has a wide range of purely ornamental uses. Bronze is ductile, resistant to corrosion and fatigue. In addition, bronze is superior to copper in terms of strength and corrosion resistance. Common uses for bronze alloys include musical instruments, medals, and aircraft bushings where low metal friction is required. Unfortunately, bronze is expensive to work with due to its high copper content.

Milling plotters and soft metals

Soft metals have very favorable properties and are perfect for machining with CNC milling machines. They are typically easy to process, naturally corrosion resistant and well suited to a wide variety of applications in a variety of industries. For engineers and manufacturers, selecting the material best suited to a given project is one of the most important decisions they must make in the product development process. They must exercise due diligence to ensure that they achieve the desired results, which can be helped by milling plotters from the Polish CNC Group.
